Reviews Laura’s journey is a remarkable one. I am so thrilled that she has chosen to draw upon her collective experiences as a wife, mom, educator, cancer survivor and woman of faith to share her story of hope as a way to support, educate and inspire others. She certainly has touched my life in this way and for that, I am grateful. Thank you, Laura. I am honored to call you my friend. Dr. Katy Cortelyou, Education Consultant In the midst of her hard fought battle, her faith was tested, but she came out the other side with a refined sense of her role in God’s world. It was during this fight that Laura also assumed the leadership role of principal of one of the largest elementary schools in her district. She began to write and share her joys and sorrows while always standing on the Word. We can all learn and benefit from the experiences of this woman of faith; teacher of all children; leader in public education; a loving mother, wife, and now Grandma! Debra Edmiston Senior Director of Elementary Education, Retired Laura Starner’s story about her journey through breast cancer struck me on all emotional levels. Not only is she an accurate and prolific note keeper, but she also put her experience into words so that I was able to understand even the technical terms. In the process, I learned to understand my own body a little more. When I picked up the book and started reading, I could not put it down. I had to know what happened next and sometimes I just let tears roll down my cheeks. This story is a must read not only for someone who is diagnosed with cancer, but for every woman and man. It could change your life as it has mine! Laura's story is no ordinary medical journey. It's about a married mother of two active in her community, an educator and woman of great faith in God, who humbly and graciously worked through breast cancer treatment and recovery, without allowing it to change her positive outlook or goals. Laura details the steps of her discovery to her recovery--including miracles and blessings that I will let new readers learn about (no spoiler alerts here :) ). One thing I found encouraging, that I believe others will too, is the scriptures Laura turned to on her journey. Another thing is how in the midst of everything, Laura kept her love on for others. It is evident that prior to the diagnosis, Laura was living an impactful life and had surrounded herself with supportive people who then afterward were used by God to help her when she needed it most. God met her in her faith where she was at in each moment. Laura bravely keeps things real and we can see that God was very good to her. I do not know Laura personally offline, but prior to reading her book, this pattern of kindness, positivity, faith, and impactful authenticity are apparent in her life online as she volunteers in one of the same ministries I do. It is seen in a huge way in the way she reaches out to people, educating them and encouraging them through her blog. She's an encourager, speaks life or edifies and uplifts everyone around her.
This book will encourage any reader, whether it's someone who is going through any kind of struggle right now--be it breast cancer or anything else. It will also encourage anyone who is a caregiver for someone going through breast cancer or another struggle. The account is well-written and can be read chapter by chapter and then reflected upon or straight through and reflected upon. I read it straight through and found myself praising God for what He did in Laura's life. This book will be a blessing to others who read it. I definitely recommend it for anyone who is in the midst of a struggle, who is a caregiver for someone with breast cancer or something else or anyone counsels in some way. So many others would benefit from reading Laura's book too--doctors, medical professionals, pastors, churches. It's a graciously communicated book that gives God all the glory for the victory, and provides a model for partnering with God in faith, thought, and action.

Keeping It Real Personal Reflections of My Journey Through Breast Cancer Laura Starner 9781520509082 Books Reviews
This book is nothing less than amazing! I loved how not only did Laura share some of her darkest / happier times ❤ her family shared as well. Very inspiring and helpful especially for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers.
Laura's book Keeping It Real is inspirational. She trusted God through this difficult time. Keeping it real will help and encourage others whike going through a similar experience.
Having just traveled the bumpy, complicated, and unpredictable road through cancer with another friend, Laura's Book brings even more encouragement and mindfulness. It is a great inspiration before, during, and after a battle with cancer or any other life challenge.
This is a powerful read. So refreshing to know that someone makes it too the other side! Very encouraging since I'm facing the cancer issue myself. I love Laura's approach from a very honest, personal side of her life and opening the window to her world for the helpful benefit of other people. I admire her personal determination to keep her life as normal as possible.
Such a powerful read on so many levels. While the details of Laura's journey were painfully raw and personal, I was continually inspired by her unwavering faith, optimism, strength and self-advocacy. An emotionally moving read for anyone battling cancer as well as caregivers, family and friends.
"Keeping it Real," is a story that faces the raw emotions and journey of a strong woman enduring one of the most frightful experiences that no woman wants to face. An excellent read as her words allow you to "feel" the emotions of her journey and how it impacted all aspects of her life. It also validated the relationship between God and His children during our Earthly struggles. The author/survivor writes her story in a way that is easy to read, follow, and understand in a very complex world of medical vocabulary. Her story brought out many emotions and relatable life experiences of compassion, empathy, and love. Thank you for sharing a story of selflessness and courage during a traumatic, yet "silver lined" journey.
I have known Laura personally for 25+ years and am ashamed to say I didn't even know she had breast cancer until after she had walked down this road. Laura has always been an encourager and has a strong faith in God. It is clear that this journey has not diminished, but strengthened her faith. I love her positive attitude. And it's true, she is always smiling. I have known, and know friends and family who have made this journey, but I've not completely known the "behind the scenes" pain and challenges. Thank you, Laura, for your friendship and for sharing your family's journey.
